This evening I decided to go for a run. One item that is always present for my runs is my trusty Ipod. I pat myself on the back for the mix, but tonight was special. My first 10 minutes was tough and I couldn't get a rhythm going, but then it happened. Like a light in the dark, John Cafferty's Hearts on fire comes on. Not familiar with Mr. Cafferty(well neither was I, but google took care of that)? He is the genius who wrote the training montage(

I recently got an email saying that my blogs are too funny and that I make light of serious topics. So tonight, I'm taking a Detour and I'm going to talk about something very, very important:
There are tribes in Africa that send boys into the jungle to kill a lion as a test of becoming a man.Young Spartan boys were thrust naked into the snow, forced to kill a wolf before being deemed a man. Other cultures go through long rituals as rites of passage. I've been around the world, fought sk…

I was refereeing a Jiu Jitsu tournament yesterday and noticed one group of competitors grouped together. They would look at me and then huddle together like hens eating corn, look at me and then go back to grazing. I looked over to the head chicken and asked if he had something to say. His answer "no, not a thing", but as is so common, as soon as I backed away he goes back to his friends and starts talking again. When the tournament was over I confronted the head chicken again. After pushing him…

So I moved out of "beautiful" Temecula( quotes denote sarcasm) a little over 2 weeks ago. I am now living in what is referred to as "The valley", which is basically right above Hollywood Ca. I was traveling all over for training anyways, so I figured I should at least somewhere I would like to live. Temecula just didn't suit me and I am glad to be out of there. Since Ive moved Ive been in that dreaded "transition" period(bear with me, I have a feeling there will be a lot of " " in this blog). I…

In MMA your only as good as your last win and the last BIG press you have done. When you are on TV and in every magazine or on a HUGE win streak, you are relevant. You have worth. People want to know you and opportunity is everywhere. What happens when Your not winning, not on TV, not in the magazines, not RELEVANT?
Its strange for me. Ive been in all aspects of the fight game. I started off fighting in 2002 when the sport as a whole had no mainstream relevance. It didn't matter to tho…

I watched the footage of my latest fight the same night the fight happened. The Tachi Palace gives you a DVD right after the event is over. I got to see and HEAR the entire bout. Now, I am of course biased, but I felt the fight up to that point was competitive and really could have gone either way up to the end. I watched the fight with commentating and I started to doubt it myself. Im seeing him not hit me, but the commentators are saying Im taking shots, they are saying Im not imposing my will…

So, I fought last night. The fight was really back and forth and ending the second round, I felt it could have gone either way. With less than a min to go, I threw a right kick, my opponent, caught it and tried to counter with a right hand leading in, I spun and caught him clean with a spinning back fist that dropped him. I immediately jumped on his back and choked him. I very nice ending to a hard fight.
Its not 8:30 Am the day after. Im sore but in a good way. I have some marks on my…

Today is Sunday, the one day of the week where I don't workout. Now, this Sunday it being right before my fight, I wont do anything. Ive been pushing through 8 or more weeks of training and my body needs to recuperate. I would normally try to do some "active rest" like a walk or a moderate hike to ensure I'm still burning calories and keeping my muscles working. Like I said though, I am relaxing and really enjoying it.
Ive pushed my body hard and reflecting back on the weeks in the gym, I'm rea…

Im 6 days away from my next fight and Ive been thinking about all the great places and people Ive trained with for this fight. Im very fortunate to be able to train at different places and get different insight into the fight game. Ive traveled before, but I really went out and worked with a ton of great people for this fight. I figured I would break down the coaches Ive been training with and my insight into each of them and what them brought to the table.
Id like to first list all of the gyms…

I get asked fairly often what my diet consists of and what I do to get ready for a fight, so I figured I would take some time to go over what I eat and the break down.
First off, Im not a cook by any means. Now, I can cook certain things, but to really cook? Just not me. I try to keep things as simple as possible. It took me a while to dial down what works for me and I can say that what works for me may not work for everyone.
Basics. Next to no sugar, fried foods, low amounts of dairy, lean me…

Last Year was crazy and this year seems to be gearing up for more of the same.
Firstly, My next fight is against the very Game Dominique "fallen Angel" Robinsen in the Tachi Palace Fighting organization. Ive been training really hard for this fight and should come in very well prepared. Ive been traveling all over the place(Erik Paulsons CSW, Millennia Jiu Jitsu, tap…

Yes, as the post says below my tooth was knoced out in training by my coach Santino. It was not hard enough to knock me out but hard enough to break my tooth in half. I am now sporting the Dan Henderson look, now i just need to get a few knocouts like him and i will be well on my way to the UFC. I will check back in and keep everyone updated.
Thank you mtx

Ive been teaching for over 5years now. I have had students who are interested in training for many different reasons. Self Defense, fitness, to compete, and any other of reasons. For all the different reasons, I enjoy teaching them and give them 100% of what I knowledge I have. Now the one thing that I REFUSE is to be a punk factory.
Ive noticed that as MMA grows, so does the mainstream exposure and sadly, so does the punk factor. Dont know what the punk factor is? Attitude over respect, trying…

I shouldnt be writing this because future opponents may think this is giving them some insight into fighting me, but I need to say it. I have a serious deficiency in my game when it comes fight time. I hesitate with using my stand up. I train all aspects of the game and in the room, Im very comfortable with boxing or kickboxing. In fact, I enjoy doing it and feel I can hold my own with anyone on the feet. Unfortunately, when it comes to the actual fight, I revert back to my grappling too much. N…

well my last fight went pretty fast. I took sat/sun off and was back in the gym on Monday. The first week was pretty laid back. I did cross fit twice and one bag workout, but after that, it was back to work. I trained at Erik Paulsons CSW, Millennia Jiu Jitsu, Rodrigo Mederios and my own gym(Bob Chaney Martial arts) and picked up my strength & Conditioning at CrossFitByOverLoad. I put in a solid 3 weeks. It was good because I was already in shape and had no injuries. The hardest part was get…

I arrived at the palace weighing 166lbs on wed. I had 10 pounds to cut and was for the most part I was feeling good. My stomach was in knots though. Not from anxiety, but from Potassium poisoning! Tuesday night I stupidly decided to over saturate my body with a potassium supplement. Cutting water weight depletes your body of Potassium and I thought by taking a large dose it would offset the suffering of the cut. Now, I usually dont deviate from my usual routine, but I took a gamble and paid for…
