Ive been teaching for over 5years now. I have had students who are interested in training for many different reasons. Self Defense, fitness, to compete, and any other of reasons. For all the different reasons, I enjoy teaching them and give them 100% of what I knowledge I have. Now the one thing that I REFUSE is to be a punk factory.
Ive noticed that as MMA grows, so does the mainstream exposure and sadly, so does the punk factor. Dont know what the punk factor is? Attitude over respect, trying to be a "tough guy", starting fights, ensuring anyone who will listen knows "your a fighter". Basically everything that goes against martial arts.
Im not a traditionalist by any means. I dont make my students bow, you dont have to call me sensei, but I refuse to have my students become one of these new masses. I dont understand where respect and being humble was lost. We all make mistakes and I remember when I first started the feeling of empowerment that learning jiu jitsu gave me. I understand the changes, but I also know that respect is key.
How will this change? I have no idea and sadly I dont think it will. Hopefully as an instructor I can instill a better sense of values in my students. I have been training for over 11yrs and will continue to, but I truly hope at least on my end, I can present a good medium better MMA and true martial arts
